Using FAOPGP Lite
Default Settings Dialog
Selecting 'Default Settings' from FAOPGP's menu option in Windows Explorer or from the Security Menu in the FAOPGP GUI displays the following dialog where you can specify how you want FAOPGP to handle files.
Protect Options
These options are used by FAOPGP when you encrypt / sign files.
Destination Folder of Protected Files
Same as source. Protected files are stored in the same location as the original (unprotected) files that you are currently working with. This is called the "Source" folder. For example, if your unprotected file is located in c:\mydocuments then your protected file will also be stored in c:\mydocuments. The destination folder will change depending on where the original (unprotected) files are located.
Folder. You can choose a folder via the Browse button where protected files will always be stored. The destination folder will remain the same no matter where the original (unprotected) files are located.
NOTE: Archives are treated differently than normal files. If you have have selected to archive files then you will be prompted to choose a destination folder and name for the archive file.
Remove Original Files
Box unchecked - the original (unprotected) files will remain on your disk along with the protected files.
Box checked - the original (unprotected) files will be securely deleted so that they cannot be recovered. Only the protected files will remain on the disk. You will be asked to confirm file deletion.
NOTE: If you are going to use the software for storing encrypted files (rather than sending them to others via email) then check this box - that way you will not have to manually delete the original unprotected files and only the protected files will remain on the disk.
If you are sending encrypted files to others you will probably want to leave this box unchecked so that the original (unprotected) file also remains on your disk.
Overwrite Existing Files
Box unchecked - if protected files already exist with the same name in the destination folder you will be prompted as to whether you want to overwrite them or not.
Box checked - protected files that already exist with the same name in the destination folder will automatically be overwritten and no warning will be given.
For example, if you had a file called 'c:\myfiles\address.doc.pgp' and you protect the file 'address.doc' to c:\myfiles\ then FAOPGP will protect this as 'c:\myfiles\address.doc.pgp'. If you have 'overwrite existing files' checked then your existing 'address.doc.pgp' file will get overwritten by the one you protect. If you DO NOT have 'overwrite existing files' checked then you will be prompted as to whether you want to overwrite the existing file or not with the new one.
Save encrypted/signed files as Text
Checking this box saves files in .asc format (ascii) instead of .pgp format (binary). You may want to use this option if the recipients firewall or anti-virus checker is preventing .pgp format files from getting through.
Always prompt me for filename
If you check this box then you will be asked to enter a filename for the newly protected file - a file browser dialog will be displayed once you press the 'Protect' button. This option is the same as selecting 'Save As' in other software. If this box is left unchecked then the original filename will be used.
Compatibility with PGP 5 and 6
You must check this box if you want to send encrypted files to PGP v5 and v6 users. Checking this box forces FAOPGP to use Triple DES as the encryption algorithm. This is because the default algorithm, AES is not supported in these products.
Unprotection Options
These options are used by FAOPGP when you decrypt / verify files.
Destination Folder of Unprotected Files
Same as source. Unprotected files are stored in the same location as the protected files that you are currently working with. This is called the "Source" folder. For example, if your protected file is located in c:\mydocuments then your unprotected file will also be stored in c:\mydocuments. The destination folder will change depending on where the protected files are located.

Box checked - the protected files will be securely deleted so that they cannot be recovered. Only the unprotected files will remain on the disk. You will be asked to confirm file deletion.
Overwrite Existing Files
Box unchecked - if the original (unprotected) files already exist with the same name in the destination folder you will be prompted as to whether you want to overwrite them or not.
Box checked - unprotected files that already exist with the same name in the destination folder will automatically be overwritten and no warning will be given.
For example, if you had a file called 'c:\myfiles\address.doc' and you unprotect the file 'address.doc.pgp' to c:\myfiles\ then FAOPGP will unprotect this as 'c:\myfiles\address.doc'. If you have 'overwrite existing files' checked then your existing 'address.doc' file will get overwritten by the one you unprotect. If you DO NOT have 'overwrite existing files' checked then you will be prompted as to whether you want to overwrite the existing file or not with the new one.
