Using FAOPGP CLS
The ArticSoft Security Management System
All the keys that you need for encrypting, signing, decrypting, and verifying files are held in a special file called a keystore.
Before you can create and execute script files you must logon to the keystore so FAOPGP CLS has access to your keys and those of people you need to encrypt information for. At all other times the keystore is protected so that no one else can use it.
NOTE: If the PC is left unattended you may choose to run a secure screen saver or logoff from your keystore. Bear in mind that if you logoff from your keystore any tasks you have scheduled will not run as FAOPGP CLS needs access to your keystore in order to perform cryptographic functions. See Keystore Logon & Security.
Registration dialog - evaluating FAOPGP CLS
If you are evaluating FAOPGP CLS then the following dialog will be displayed each time before the program loads.
Press the 'Continue Using FileAssurity OpenPGP CLS' to start the application.
NOTE: If you want to run FAOPGP CLS as a service you will need to register the product. Please email support@articsoft.com if you would like to receive a registered time-limited version so you can evaluate this feature.
Creating your keystore
When you first install FAOPGP CLS, it checks to see if you have a previously installed version of an ArticSoft keystore (this could be from a previous installation of FAOPGP CLS). If you have, it is automatically selected and you don't need to do anything. Otherwise one is automatically created for you.
If no keystore is detected when you start FAOPGP CLS for the first time the following dialog is displayed:
Enter New Password
You must enter a password for the keystore. The password must be between 8 and 40 alphanumeric or special characters.
The password you enter here is used to protect the keystore from being used by other people and is used as part of a special key to unprotect the keystore during normal operation. If you would like guidance on password selection please see choosing a good password.
NOTE: You must choose a password that can only be known by you. If FAOPGP CLS is being used by several administrators then they will need to know this password in order to activate the system. The personal keys in the keystore are protected using this password. The longer the password is, the harder it is for anyone else to guess or discover. Take care to remember this password and do not disclose it to anyone who is not authorized. If someone manages to log on to the keystore then they can masquerade as your organization.
'Password' is not acceptable to FAOPGP CLS as a valid password because it is seen as insecure. If you choose this, the next time you use FAOPGP CLS you will be required to change it.
Confirm New Password
Retype the password you entered in the new password field to confirm that it is correct.
As soon as you press
the keystore is created, protected with the password you just entered. You are now logged onto the keystore and FAOPGP CLS is ready for use.
If you press
the keystore is not created and FAOPGP CLS will not start. You can, however, create the keystore next time you start FAOPGP CLS.
Future Logons
Every time you start the FAOPGP CLS script editor or key manager you will be asked to logon to the keystore (if you are not already logged on). Please read Keystore Logon & Security for further information.
NOTE: If you installed the keystore to the 'Default' folder then make sure when you start up your computer and logon to Windows that you use the same user name as you did when you created the keystore. Otherwise, FAOPGP CLS will create a new keystore under the user profile you have just logged onto Windows with, and you may not have a license for this new installation.
